On the Process of Becoming

I remember, as a child, thinking that being an adult was some singular, unchanging state of being. And those adults came in different flavors. There were adults who were in their 20s, those in their 30s, and so on.

These adults could never understand me, as a child — because they were adults. To me, they’d always been adults. And forevermore, they would always be adults. They were unchanging characters in my story.

As we get older, we come to understand more about the world.

Inevitably, we grow, change, and continue on. The adults that I thought would forever be 20 moved onto 30, and so on.

It turns out that we only ever are something for a period of time — the present.

Yet, as obvious as this may sound, we can easily fall into the trap of thinking we are something, rather than realizing that we only are that something presently.

The challenge is to have the self-awareness to disregard our desire to know ourselves to the degree that our identity calcifies into something permanent.

It’s to instead see ourselves as a work in progress, always changing.

When we can begin to consistently see ourselves as something in the present moment with the opportunity to change, to grow, and to evolve, we can break free from stagnation. We are instead always in the process of becoming whatever is next.

Perhaps, becoming superhuman.
